DISTILLED AT

PORT ELLEN DISTILLERY

Founded in 1825 on Islay’s southern coast, Port Ellen began as a malt mill supplying local illicit distillers before Alexander Kerr Mackay transformed it into a distillery. In 1836, 21-year-old John Ramsay took over, establishing Port Ellen as a centre of innovation and exporting malt whisky to the U.S. Ownership changed in 1920, and the distillery joined DCL in 1925. Closed in 1930, it reopened in 1967, then shut again in 1983—though its malting operations continued. Revived by Diageo, Port Ellen reopened in 2024. Known for its rich, smoky peat character, marine oiliness, and citrus core, it now features both traditional and experimental stills, and innovative equipment. With limited stock and a distinctive profile, Port Ellen has become one of the most collectible names in Scotch whisky, marking a return to Islay’s whisky landscape.
